Dachshunds originated in Germany and can be traced as far back as the 15th century. They were used as hunting dogs, the literal meaning of their name is ‘Badger Dogs’.
Their trademark short legs, big front paws, smooth loose skin, large chests, elongated bodies, determination, and independence were perfect for digging, entering tunnels, and fighting their prey, badgers. Their large flap down ears help keep dirt and debris out when burrowing.
There were primarily two sizes, the miniature and the standard with the smaller ‘kanichen’ or ‘rabbit’ size becoming more popular in Europe later in history.
